For those who want to be able to rent and watch the latest Hollywood blockbusters without leaving their couch, there are options. For those who want to do the same with adult content, there’s few. We’re taking a look at the FyreTV BoXXX, a set-top device that sets out to be the best video-on-demand service in existence.

Introduction

NOTE: This article contains adult material (18+).

We’ve taken a look at a fair number of media players in recent months from companies such as AC Ryan, Roku and Western Digital, but the FyreTV BoXXX that we’re looking at today is only the second streaming-only device. In that regard, it could be best compared to the Apple TV, but with a stark twist.

While the Apple TV has a major focus on delivering an enormous movie collection either via Apple’s own iTunes store or Netflix, FyreTV’s focus is to deliver the same sort of huge selection, but for porn and nothing but.

With the advent of online digital content, fewer people are running out to the stores to pick up the latest movie, audio CD or book, and adult entertainment is no different. It’s FyreTV’s goal to deliver a set-top box that brings video-on-demand to an entirely new level, with a far greater selection than any other VOD service can offer.

Once setup, the BoXXX takes full advantage of your Internet connection to stream all of the content you purchase… there is no straight-out downloading here, which is a bit unfortunate. But for those who enjoy VOD services, that limitation won’t even be noticed.

On the surface, the BoXXX looks like a nondescript piece of hardware, which I’m sure was the intention. Alongside other equipment next to your TV, the BoXXX is meant to blend in and not draw attention to itself, and it’s unlikely that guests will look at it and have any idea as to what it is.

The BoXXX, like other media players we’ve taken a look at, offers a wide-range of connectivity options, including S-Video (Good), Component (Better) and HDMI (Best). Digital audio can be delivered through a S/PDIF connection, and for networking, a wired or wireless connection can be used.

Although the BoXXX includes two USB 2.0 ports, neither of them do anything at this point in time. The reason they’re there is because FyreTV included them in case future peripherals or extendability required them, but for now, they’re about as useless as this thing would be without an Internet connection.

Included with the BoXXX is a small HDMI cable, designed to be long enough for the BoXXX to sit right beside the TV, a LAN cable, AC power adapter, WiFi antenna, RCA video connectors and also the remote.

The remote is the most interesting aspect of the BoXXX, as it features a strange shape that fits in your hand perfectly, better than most other remotes. Because the features of the BoXXX are somewhat limited, there aren’t too many buttons on the remote, and most of them I never even had to touch.

The remote does have a rather notable flaw, though, and for the lack of a better word, all I can describe it as is “stiff”. The bottom buttons aren’t much of a problem, but the arrow buttons are so tight that I literally could feel the muscles above my wrist being stressed in what was clearly not an ideal way. After a few minutes, my arm felt a bit sore, and that was just to set the device up!

On the next page, we’ll tackle software and the service.
