Futuremark has announced that it will be adding VRMark to its fleet of benchmarks at some point this year. It doesn’t take much imagination to understand what this tool’s goals will be, but what can’t be understated is just how important it could become. I’d wager it’ll be even more important than 3DMark, because with virtual reality, there are far many more important factors at play.
VRMark is going to be a bit different from Futuremark’s other benchmarking suites. For starters, it’s going to be a software and hardware solution, and consequently, it’s going to be targeted at hardware manufacturers, analysts, and press – not end-users. Ultimately, the tool will measure system performance, latency, and accuracy.
With its GeForce GTX TITAN X, NVIDIA touted the fact that it was a superb VR graphics card, and that’s because fast performance and low-latencies are extremely important when someone has the gameplay right in front of their eyeballs. There’s not much room for lag, because people could get dizzy, and there’s not much point of using VR if the graphics are unimpressive.
This is one benchmark I am definitely looking forward to learning more about.
