Apple does have one major advantage, though: its fans are REAL fans. People I know who own the iPhone don't -care- about the limitations of the latest version, they're still buying them up. By contrast, anyone I know who owns a good Samsung smartphone at the moment wouldn't think twice about going with HTC next time if that company's product happens to be more compelling.

It DOES help though, that the software across all Android vendors can be used on each device, whereas on the Apple side, you're locked-in. I could see not wanting to leave Apple if you have $100s worth of apps purchased.

It has always been sort of expected that no company can dominate the market for too long.

I've been advocating since the beginning that Apple position in the market would be challenged as soon as the competition caught up. Not just challenged, but the company risks becoming, for the second time in its history, an irrelevant 3rd rank player of the industry. It's all due to how much the tablet and smart phone devices of this company accept or not an open architecture. It was this that shot Apple to the back rank of personal computers for 2 decades and it will be this much that will do it again if Apple insists in developing devices completely locked to their platform.

I also won't trust that many revolutionary features are going to happen in the smart phone market. Maybe the PC, but not the smartphone. Smart phones have matured and the competition will become increasingly more about quality/price ratios than about some neat new technology. There's not much room for Apple here.
