Back in November, just ten days after the release of Google’s ‘Lollipop’ Android OS, NVIDIA announced that it’d be bringing the OS to its high-end SHIELD Tablet a week later. For a company that has just a couple of its own mobile devices, that’s rather ambitious, but without a hitch, it came out on schedule (but a little later for LTE devices, it must be said).
Given NVIDIA’s ambition to bring Lollipop to the SHIELD Tablet, I wouldn’t have blamed you if you thought that the company would quickly follow-up with a release for its other Tegra devices as well, such as the SHIELD portable and Tegra Note 7. But since that time, the company has remained rather quiet about it.
As there have been murmurs that the OS would in fact be hitting both of those devices, I touched-base with NVIDIA just to see if I could get something of substance. Well, I am happy to say that no, I got squat. It was confirmed that both devices would be getting the OS, but given previous reports, that’s no longer a surprise. When asked for a ballpark idea of when the release could happen, I was told that the date is still up-in-the air.
It might not seem too obvious given the fact that the vast majority of NVIDIA’s graphics card models are leaked in advance of launch, but the company is quite good at keeping secrets, and keeping all of us guessing. Therefore, it’s impossible to judge based on the wording when we can expect to hear about an update. It could be next week, or it could be next month. At worst, I’d expect to hear something within a month, but that’s simply based on the fact that it can only take so long.
Feel less informed after reading this? I can’t say that I blame you.
