Pirate Parties International, the umbrella organization for the worldwide Pirate Parties, are bouncing ideas around the prospect of launching a satellite for the purpose of hosting a torrent site in space. Why you may ask? So that it can not be taken down for breach of copyright… there are no laws in space, right?
TorrentFreak was made aware of some interesting conversations happening over the Pirate Party International mailing list. The idea of launching a satellite is being taken very seriously along with other ideas such as; boats in international waters and balloons. The Pirate Bay wanted to buy the micro-nation of Sealand for the purpose of hosting without being restricted by laws, but couldn’t due to the costs involved.
Launching a satellite into space sounds cool, but it still needs to connect to an ISP, so it could still be denied access (rather than taken down). One option could be to setup its own ISP, but again, it needs to be setup in a country (or micro-nation) that won’t take legal action. The use of remote boats in international waters is also interesting, but still suffers similar problems of connectivity.
Lets just hope that certain individuals don’t take the Low Orbit Ion Cannon DDoS tool too literary.
It is almost four years ago that The Pirate Bay announced they wanted to buy the micronation of Sealand, so they could host their site without having to bother about copyright law – an ambitious plan that turned out to be unaffordable. This week, Pirate Parties worldwide started brainstorming about a similarly ambitious plan. Instead of founding their own nation, they want to shoot a torrent site into orbit.
