If you received a copy of Dirt 3 via the purchase of an AMD graphics card, you may want to pay close attention to this story. It appears that up to 1.7 million Steam voucher codes have been compromised – and not because a ‘hacker’ broke into a server. Rather, the codes were being stored on a third-party fulfillment agency’s website as plain text, with anyone who knew the URL having access to them.
Those who purchased the game off-the-shelf or via some other means, or directly through Steam itself, don’t have reason for alarm. It’s only those who received a voucher for a free copy of the game via an AMD graphics card that should keep an eye out, because it appears that your code was in these multiple lists.

It’s unknown how many people took advantage of scoring free copies, or what Codemasters (or AMD) plan to do to handle the situation. If you have already activated your free copy, chances are you’re fine. If you have a voucher and haven’t used it yet, you may want to soon. If you purchase an AMD card in the near-future that contains a voucher and it doesn’t work, you should be able to contact support from your card vendor, AMD, or Codemasters. I am sure more information will come out about soon enough.
With all the news hovering around hacking and cracking lately, you’d think that it’d cause some companies to take a look at their security measures deeper. Apparently that wasn’t the case with this firm that stored all these codes in a publicly-accessible URL and in plain text. Sigh.
