Raspberry Pi Now Has Its Own App Store

Since the first Raspberry Pi board shipped, both the community surrounding the platform and software support has exploded. Today, the platform gets another boost, this time in the form of an app store. Simply called the “Pi Store”, it should become the one-stop shop for Raspberry Pi owners, assuming they’re using a distro that supports it. Using Raspbian? You’re set.

The store currently houses 23 free titles, including the likes of LibreOffice, Asterisk, Freeciv and OpenTTD. One commercial application is also available, a game called Storm in a Teacup.

Similar to iTunes, the Pi Store comes in the form of an app, rather than be accessible through the Web. This is no doubt due to the fact that the app contains the proper hooks that allows apps to install seamlessly – preferable to having people download an installer and deal with it manually.

The Pi Store at the moment has a modest selection, but this is an excellent addition to the platform. It’ll allow RPi owners quicker access to common applications and perhaps even discover some new ones.
