NAS appliances are wonderful products, as I’m sure we’ve proven through all of our NAS coverage over the years. Over those years, though, one area that’s vastly improved has been with apps. No longer do you simply purchase a NAS and use what’s shipped with it, but now you can choose from dozens or potentially hundreds of different apps to enhance your NAS’ capabilities.
One vendor that’s heavily promoted its app integration is Thecus, and today, the company boasts breaking through the 200 app mark, currently sitting at 234. These apps range anywhere from AMP support (Apache, MySQL, PHP), to support for blogging software, service monitors, cloud storage, torrent clients, media servers, and even virus scanners.

Despite Thecus’ huge number of third-party apps, I’m not quite sure if it’s the leader where overall numbers are concerned. Neither QNAP nor Synology give off an exact number of apps for their respective NAS platforms (that I could find, at least), but both seem to offer a large number as well.
One thing’s for sure, apps sure do make taking advantage of your NAS a lot more fun. They in effect allow you to turn a simple storage server into an actual server with unlimited possibilities.
