Tesla unveiled its much-anticipated Powerwall at the end of April to much fanfare, and in its first week of being available for pre-order, 38,000 people jumped on it. Given it was just announced a month ago, I think it’s safe to call the product a “success”, especially given what it is. But, with as neat as Powerwall is, there are many improvements that can be made as time goes on.
Well, Powerwall hasn’t even begun shipping yet and already Tesla has announced one of those improvements: more than doubling of its power output. Many customers complained that the originally announced model peaked at 2KW output, which is too low of a cap. So, the company has decided to tweak the formula and let it peak at 5KW instead.
Admittedly, I look forward to the day when Tesla announces that the Powerwall can sustain 5KW output for the same amount of time the launched iteration could sustain 2KW. Our homes are power-hungry gremlins, and it sure would be nice to have a lot of power storage at-the-ready in case it’s needed. A full 10KWh unit wouldn’t even last that long if we’re dealing with a power outage.
Nonetheless, any improvement at this point is welcomed. Recently, Tesla signed a deal with Advanced Microgrid Solutions to supply the company with enough of its product to deliver 500MWh. It seems like it will only be a matter of time because this kind of adoption results in improved technology and of course, lower prices. The future of power is bright.
