NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 1080p & 1440p Gaming Performance

The first graphics card launch of 2019 is NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 2060, a 6GB Turing GPU that retains the Tensor and RT cores of the higher-end models. At $349, the RTX 2060 targets high-FPS 1080p and 60 FPS 1440p - and yes, it offers enough juice to power Battlefield V's DXR ray tracing feature. It's hard to pick out which card of the Turing-based RTX series is most interesting. The 2080 Ti gets an unfair advantage for being the fastest, but we were left pretty impressed with the value proposition after taking a look at the RTX 2070 a couple of months ago. Arguably, the RTX 2060 could become the most interesting of the bunch, since it retains specific Turing features, and is priced for wider adoption. Speaking of price, the $349 tag on the RTX 2060 might rub some who've enjoyed the historical $249 price-point the wrong way. However, the upside is that the RTX 2060 actually does perform far better than last-gen's GTX 1060, as we'll see on the next pages. Still, when a 6600 GT at $199 in 2004 scales to $270 today, $349 is a big leap for this class of card. Here's another angle. The Pascal-based GTX 1070 and 1070 Ti both had 8GB of VRAM, and the RTX 2060 beats or matches their performance. It feels like this $349 price tag could have been better justified if that same framebuffer size was retained for RTX 2060. Even AMD's $249 Radeon RX 590 has 8GB! To NVIDIA's favor, the memory bandwidth has increased from 256GB/s to 336GB/s, so we're at least getting faster GDDR6 memory with this transition. That should mean that both cards perform about the same, but we'll learn an important lesson on the results pages about why TFLOPS performance doesn't paint the full picture, not even between generations of the same vendor. You'll see some interesting things on the next few pages. The GTX 1070 falls behind the RTX 2060, while at the same time, the RTX 2060 pulls in front of the 10 TFLOPS-spec'd RX Vega 56 quite often. Games Tested & Vendor Neutrality. A total of eight games are included in our current test suite. Some have appeared here before, while others make their first appearance: Battlefield V (with some DXR testing), Forza Horizon 4, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Beyond these eight titles, UL's 3DMark and VRMark, as well as Unigine's Superposition, are used for some quick and dirty comparison results. In most cases, each configuration is tested twice, with more runs added if the initial results make the extra testing necessary (which isn't required too often). For 1080p gaming, last-gen's GTX 1060 offers sufficient brawn, but its performance doesn't come close to the RTX 2060. A 59 FPS result becomes 104 FPS, the kind of jump that helps NVIDIA justify the unexpected $100 price jump between generations. At 1440p, the 2060 secures 60+ FPS minimum. It's important to note that this is offline gameplay, and that an online battlefield is undoubtedly going to be more demanding. AMD's Radeon RX Vega 56 becomes an interesting comparison here, as well. It costs at least $50 more than the RTX 2060, but falls short of its performance in BF V (which won't be the case in all games). We haven't explored ray tracing benchmarking up to this point, but to be more complete for this article, we loaded up the game's fifth mission with DXR set to Ultra. Using the same segment of the game for testing, ray tracing unsurprisingly took a gouge out of the performance: At 1080p, the 2060's 57 FPS is sufficient enough, but unless you want to turn down the DXR detail level, you're going to trudge through the game at a rather paltry 38 FPS on average at 1440p. Whether the drop in resolution is worth the increase in effects is entirely based on your tastes. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. The RTX 2060 brings us great performance in Deus Ex: Mankind Divided at 1080p, even though the game's detail levels are quite high. At the higher 1440p resolution, the average frame rate drops to a still-suitable 61 FPS, with the minimum not taking too great a chip off of that. Meanwhile, AMD's RX Vega 56 inches a bit ahead of NVIDIA's RTX 2060 here. F1 2018. The popular F1 game series from Codemasters looks good, and fortunately, it doesn't require a big system to deliver satisfying performance. At max detail, NVIDIA's RTX 2060 breaks through the 100 FPS mark at 1080p. The 1440p resolution boost doesn't actually take that great of a toll, giving us an 81 FPS average, and a 68 FPS minimum. AMD's RX Vega 56 again sits behind the RTX 2060 in this title. Far Cry 5. The RTX 2060 has had no problem making the GTX 1060 look a bit weak up to this point. The performance increase from generation to generation isn't normally as big as it is here, making this card feel more like an RTX 2060 Ti (but that could be debated). At 1080p, even the GTX 1060 can handle Far Cry 5 at great detail without issue - but that's a definite cut-off point. At 1440p, at least an RX 590 is needed for (nearly) 60 FPS gameplay. NVIDIA's RTX 2060 helps bolster that further, giving us 75 FPS on average, and an 8 FPS delta between it and the minimum FPS. We still have a handful of games to go, but the trend started on the last page has already continued here. At 1080p, the RTX 2060 offers a ton of performance, hitting 88 FPS in a highly detailed Forza Horizon 4. Interestingly, the 1440p boost doesn't change performance up significantly, knocking only 16 FPS off of the average, resulting in a 71 FPS average. Monster Hunter World. Monster Hunter World is a demanding game, or it at least gives a good impression that it is. Here, the RTX 2060 handled the game no problem, delivering 68 FPS at 1440p. It's with a game like this one where the GTX 1060 begins to show its age, but it's hard to balk at a GPU that still delivers 60 FPS at 1080p (especially when that's twice what the console versions can muster). Back to the Vega 56 battle, it's clear that this game loves NVIDIA hardware, even if it's not an officially sponsored title. In that match-up, the RTX 2060 leaps ahead of the Vega 56, despite AMD's card being the technically faster of the two (eg: Vega 56 is spec'd at 10.5 TFLOPS; RTX 2060 is 6.4 TFLOPS). Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Some of the games tested in this article have been particularly hard on the GTX 1060, but Shadow of the Tomb Raider absolutely punishes it. At 1080p, 52 FPS is "good enough" to get by...
