NVIDIA’s new Turing-based GeForce RTX graphics cards have landed, and we have a lot of performance information inside these few pages to help you justify (or not justify) a purchase. We’re pitting both of the new cards along with six last-gen models against eight games at three resolutions – including 4K and 3440×1440.

Battlefield 1

As it’s tested in our suite, Battlefield 1 isn’t as intensive as I’d like it to be. The best way to stress any game in the game’s series would be to hop online, but with varying match settings and net latencies, it’s not a reliable way to test. My wish is that DICE will eventually include a built-in benchmark that’s focused on large-scale battles, since it’s with online play when the going gets tough.

From a single player perspective, any higher-end card of this or the previous generation will handle the game at 2560×1440 with ease. Even the GTX 1080 Ti peaked at 127 FPS on average, and it along with its higher-end brethren delivered 100+ FPS at the ultrawide resolution of 3440×1440.

At 3840×2160, the RTX 2080 Ti delivers almost 100 FPS on average, which should be a welcomed sight to anyone who’s considering the purchase of a high-refresh 4K monitor. Changing to the RTX 2080, it manages to place ahead ever so slightly of the GTX 1080 Ti at all three resolutions.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

Most of the games in this test suite have been benchmarked with “near max” graphics settings, but Mankind Divided is different. Applying a blanket ‘High’ or ‘Very High’ profile with this game can quickly lead to crippling performance, so this is one title where the graphics settings have been massaged to deliver as much eye candy as possible while still retaining realistic frame rates.

With those as-tested settings, NVIDIA’s newest top-end GPU delivered 60 FPS on average at 4K resolution. Put another way, the 2080 Ti delivers a 27% boost in performance over the TITAN Xp. At the ultrawide resolution of 3440×1440, the performance is nearly 50% better.

F1 2018

F1 2018 (4K) - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 and 2080 Ti Performance

With as good as the F1 series from Codemasters looks, it may be easy to believe that it’s pretty graphically demanding, but it’s anything but that. At 1440p, the GTX 1070 blows past 60 FPS, so for any modern card at 1080p, it won’t be hard to get smooth performance. The settings used for testing here were the highest possible, which means the AO mode was bumped to ASSAO, and SSRT Shadows were turned on (not default behavior even if you choose the highest profile).

95 FPS at 4K with max detail on an RTX 2080 Ti in this game should mean that it could be run on a triple 1440p setup and keep above 60 FPS at the same settings, or at least close to them. For 4K Surround, a single GPU might not be enough (and that’s not to say this game supports multi-GPU, because it doesn’t seem to).

Far Cry 5

Far Cry 5 (4K) - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 and 2080 Ti Performance

It took us to get to the fourth of eight games to get a result that needs to be scrutinized a little bit. At 3440×1440, the RTX 2080 fell behind the GTX 1080 Ti, which based on previous results seems a bit strange. It is strange, but it’s not the result of fudged testing. In some cases, the 1080 Ti will defy logic and outperform the RTX 2080, and repeatably so.

As for the top dog RTX 2080 Ti, it continues to deliver a huge uptick in performance over the TITAN Xp. It might be better to compare it to the 1080 Ti, but the fact of the matter is, the 2080 Ti is closer to the TITAN Xp in price than it is the 1080 Ti.
