For tech enthusiasts, a 1024×768 resolution is something of history – one that most of us likely used 10 years ago. But believe it or not, until recently that resolution was still the most used on the Internet, only now finally being surpassed by 1366×768. In checking our own stats, 1024×768 places #5. Tablets no doubt helped boost the usage up a bit, but even so, it’s almost humorous to see a resolution delivering less than 1MP still being used by many.
That’s not to say that 1366×768 is a major improvement (it’s in fact only a ~25% gain in pixels). As the height is still the same, 1366×768 essentially turns that aged resolution into a wide-screen friendly one. But, it’s also important to note that 1366×768 is used on many, many notebook PCs. Without surveys, it’d be difficult to find out the most popular resolutions when treating notebooks and desktops as separate.
For those interested, here are the top 5 resolutions used to browse Techgage over the past 30 days:
- #1 – 1920×1080 (19.52%)
- #2 – 1366×768 (10.57%)
- #3 – 1280×1024 (10.20%)
- #4 – 1680×1050 (9.47%)
- #5 – 1024×768 (7.48%)
Those stats don’t quite align to StatCounter’s most recent global chart, but that’s to be expected given our site targets a techier crowd. According to StatCounter’s findings, 1280×800, 1024×768 and 1366×768 share just about the same sort of usage. Next to those is 1440×900, which has a share of about half of those in the top #3.
There’s no better time than now to ask: what resolution are you on? Do you have any aging PCs that still use smaller resolutions, such as 1024×768?
