The holidays are meant to be a time for relaxing and enjoying family and life, but for the Android and iOS activation servers, it was the busiest time of their lives. Mobile apps research firm Flurry estimates that a combined 6.8 million Android and iOS-based devices were activated on Christmas day, resulting in a 353% increase based on the averages gathered from December 1 – 20th.
That’s not all. An incredible number of apps were downloaded on the same day: 242 million. The jump there is less impressive than the activations, but is still respectable at 125%. These numbers are compared to 2010’s results which saw 2.8 million devices activated and 150 million apps downloaded.
Unfortunately, Flurry doesn’t split up the numbers between Android and iOS, so that’s going to be left to speculation for now until a more thorough report comes along. Given Apple’s holiday push, it seems likely that iOS had a bit more than a 50% share here, but any way you look at it, both platforms deserved a sweet cup of eggnog that day.
