Valve is on a freaking roll. Over the past year, the company has added a couple of features to Steam that I’ve wanted to see for quite some time, and with the latest beta client, I can see that it’s tackled yet another: Selectable DLC.
As it’s been up to this point, if a piece of DLC is tied to a game on your account, it gets loaded; there’s no way around it unless the game itself offers the option. Notably, Civilization V offered this very behavior. Soon, though, it looks like that ability will extend to all games on Steam, allowing you to revert your game to a vanilla copy with just a few clicks of the mouse.
Here’s an example of what the options dialog looks like:
Some might question why others would want to disable any DLC if they purchased it, and for the most part, I am sure there are many different reasons for it. Someone might want to apply a mod or cheat to a game but can’t when DLC is enabled, or they may simply want to complete the base game from the start without DLC – that way they get the original experience, and can then turn the DLC back on afterwards.
Whatever a gamer’s reason, this ability is awesome.
