Impressive production values and a well-written story that’s heavy on character development and scope help make Advent Rising one of the more memorable 3rd-person shooters in recent history. Unfortunately, a poorly-implemented targeting system and several glitches prevent this from becoming the stellar title it was meant to be.
Written by famed sci-fi author, Orson Scott Card, Advent Rising takes place in the far future where we’re introduced to protagonist Gideon Wyeth, a military pilot that’s got everything going right for him including an impending marriage with his fiancée Olivia Morgan. As is fast becoming the norm for most games these days, Advent Rising starts like any Sci-Fi movie with an introductory credit roll. Once that’s over, you’re given control of Gideon’s spacecraft as he approaches a space station where his brother, decorated war hero, Ethan Wyeth awaits. The siblings are then assigned a diplomatic mission to board an alien ship. It’s there that the humans come face-to-face with the Aurelians, a species that worships the human race as gods.
