AMD Drops First Radeon Pro Enterprise Driver Of 2017, Bundles It With ReLive Capturing Software

As we covered a couple of months ago, AMD gives its professional users a choice between a standard release Radeon Pro driver and an “Enterprise” one – the latter of which is more hardened, if you want to call it that, without bleeding-edge optimizations and with the highest priority given to stability. Such goals don’t mean that the driver has to be boring, though, as just evidenced by its latest release.
I admit I didn’t expect the feature to debut so quickly in the Enterprise driver, but lo and behold, AMD has added its excellent ReLive solution to the mix. If you’re not familiar with ReLive, I’d encourage you to take a look at Jamie’s in-depth article on it. While the focus of ReLive on Radeon is with gaming, on Radeon Pro the big focus is on training, or anything in the enterprise that would benefit from being able to record the desktop.
The reason ReLive is so valuable is that it can utilize the GPU for recording so as to reduce the load on the CPU. That means that performance hit when recording will be so small, it isn’t likely to be noticed (2 or 3 FPS off of 60 FPS+ is essentially nothing).
I gave ReLive a test a couple of weeks ago, using the Radeon Pro WX 7100, and my initial experience was fantastic. If I have any request, it’s that the maximum bitrate option be boosted to 100Mbps (not needed for desktop recording, but more for “as close to lossless as possible without being overkill” game recording).
If you’re an enterprise Radeon user and want to keep up with the company’s release cadence, you should upgrade right away. The 17.Q1 driver becomes the first of four Enterprise driver releases that will occur over the course of the year. You can read some more specifics at AMD’s site here, and grab the driver here.
