AMD has long been aggressive on CPU pricing, but with Ryzen, the value was greatly enhanced for some pretty obvious reasons (namely, the Zen architecture). The boosts in architectural performance wasn’t enough for AMD, so it decided to cough up some better-than-normal CPU coolers to include in the box. You’ll commonly find the Wraith Spire in the company’s midrange Ryzen chips, which improves upon the entry-level Wraith Stealth with a beefier heatsink.
With other SKUs, the Spire can also include RGBs, but for the top-end, the Wraith Prism is included. For those who buy a Ryzen CPU with one of the smaller coolers, the Wraith MAX and Prism have been sold on their own, allowing those who like the bigger offerings to pick one up later.
Well, what’s better than buying a cooler after the fact? Having the one you want included with your CPU, of course. So, if you are seeking out either the Ryzen 5 2600X or 7 2700, you’ll want to keep your eye out for special MAX versions that are now hitting the shelves. The absolutely only difference between the regular and MAX SKUs is the cooler upgrade, but if you plan to overclock at all, and not adopt another after-market cooler, you’ll definitely want to seek this edition out.
There are a few differences between the Wraith MAX and Prism. The Prism has direct contact heatpipes, per-RGB control, and a hardware button to change the fan profile. Sure, those features are great, but the MAX is still a capable cooler, able to dissipate 200W with the fan at full speed.
So far, the only etailer that seems to stock these new SKUs is Scan in the UK, where the Ryzen 5 2600X MAX is selling for £222, and the Ryzen 7 2700 MAX for £285.
