The current shopping madness revolves around Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but if you’re in the market for a new high-end GPU, AMD wants to entice you to the RX Vega side with a couple of free games. If you’re outside of the DACH region or China, you’ll be gifted a copy of Prey and also Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus. If you’re in the DACH region, Sniper Elite 4 will replace Wolf II.
“We need to axe the price!” – What these Nazis said… probably
When you go to purchase one of these GPUs, it’s important to make sure that the actual listing highlights these bonuses, to make sure that you won’t have any troubles post-purchase (or hopefully, at least). Unfortunately, these free games have decided to come along at a time when pricing on the majority of RX Vega cards listed right now are priced higher than SRP, following a coincidental drop that occurred around the launch of NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 1070 Ti (our review).
At the moment, there is one RX Vega at SRP, but it’s the $599 limited edition, which apparently isn’t really limited at all since it keeps popping up. The liquid cooled version keeps to its SRP as well, for $699. Unfortunately, neither Amazon nor Newegg have Vega 56 cards in stock, which is a bit of a shame for AMD as Newegg has a bunch of GTX 1070 Tis for their SRP of $449. Even the GTX 1080 can be had for $510, a price that includes Destiny 2.
I feel like these free games from AMD are coming a little late, or at least at a bizarre time given the availability situation is so rough. Either cards are not available, only the special editions are, or prices are inflated to the point where the competition is where people will turn their eyes. It’s probably part of AMD’s hope that these “free” games smooth over the fact that people are paying more in the first place. At least the games included are all excellent, both Prey and Wolf II look to be a worthwhile play – though the latter will be sure to grab and twist your heartstrings at points.
If you do purchase a card with free games, you can go to Ve.ga for more information. For those wondering which etailers support this promotion, they include Best Buy, Newegg, Amazon, Microcenter, and Fry’s, in the US. Canada doesn’t exist in AMD’s qualification list, but if you’re willing to spend $880 CAD on an RX Vega 64, you can still take advantage.
