At CES, AMD pleased Ryzen mobile fans the world over when it announced that it would be handling GPU driver releases going forward. That fixes a rather annoying problem of users having to wait months for an official driver update to be provided by the notebook vendor – a genuinely pathetic problem given how often new drivers come out, and how often those new drivers fix something.
Well, Radeon Software Adrenaline 19.2.3 becomes the first up-to-date driver release from AMD to support Ryzen Mobile. Compared to the 17.40 launch drivers, the company says that performance increases about 10% on average, whereas certain eSports titles could see a boost of up to 17%.
Another performance enhancement to hit this driver is for Dirt Rally 2, although the 3% gain isn’t nearly as impressive as those mentioned above. In addition, a number of bug fixes are included, such as with Battlefield V, where a player may see outlines of their avatar after being revived, and a full-screen video bug when FreeSync is enabled.
When Radeon VII launched, many reviewers (including us) noted that the card had loud fan noise, despite the fact that three fans should mean the card should at least be modestly audible. During test, we’d even hear the fan ramp up simply sitting at a main menu. Of course, we knew that tweaking could probably help things out. But better than that, AMD has released an update to this driver that fixes the issue of fans running at fast speeds for longer than needed. The company says that this specifically impacts those who use the tuning control auto overclock feature, or manual fan curve in WattMan, so if fan noise is still an issue after updating, you may want to dig into those options a little bit.
