It’s been rumored that Apple would be holding a media event this month to launch the third iteration of the iPad, but according to sources close to the folks at AllThingsD, it’ll actually be March when it happens. At this point, no specs have been finalized about the device, though it’s been heavily rumored that it will feature a dual-core processor and a “Retina Display” slated to have 4x the resolution of the first two iPads, at 2048×1536.
The iPad 2 wasn’t quite the major update to the original that many were hoping, so for that reason the iPad 3 will become the first follow-up to feel like a “true upgrade” since Apple first made tablets popular. It might also be the an offering that ends up selling more than the original versions, as there are sure to be many out there who have opted to hold off until a more powerful version gets released. It’s also quite possible that the iPad 3 will make it even more difficult for other tablet manufacturers to make a real mark for themselves in the tablet market. Samsung and ASUS have come close, but there is still much more work to be done.
