Sometimes, the simplest products can be the most intriguing. Such is the case of Thermaltake’s latest Tt eSPORTS addition: METALCAPS. As its name and the title of this post implies, these are metal keycaps designed for CHERRY MX keyboards. In its press release, which is definitely the shortest I’ve ever received from the company, Thermaltake highlights “overall durability” and “solid feel” as the major features. I’d like to add “it looks awesome” to that perk list.
Thermaltake will be selling four METALCAPS kits in total, with three tackling four sets of popular keys (WASD, QWER, Up/Down/Left/Right Arrow) along with an Escape key. For those who want to go all out, there’s a 38 key set that takes care of all of the letters, some punctuation, the Escape key, and also the arrow keys.
So the question really is: Do you need metal keycaps? How do they feel? Well one thing’s for sure, composed of Zinc alloy, they’re certainly going to be a bit heavier than regular plastic keys, but at the same time, they’ll also definitely be more durable. It’s not often when a CHERRY MX keycap will break, but it can happen. I’m more concerned about how these will feel to use though, so for that, we’ll just have to wait for the reviews.
Pricing for the five-key sets is $19.99, with the 38-key set demanding a $69.99 price tag. A release date isn’t solidified yet, but Thermaltake tells us that they should show up at retail in less than a month-and-a-half.
