It’s no secret that daily lifestyle shows such as NBC’s Today are rife with intellectual brilliance from both the hosts and guests, and a recent episode featuring television personality and advertising mogul Donny Deutsch is hardly an exception. During a segment that welcomes viewer questions, one involved video gamers over the age of 30; “What’s up with men and video games? Do you think it’s okay for men to play video games in their 30s and over?“
The answer? “No. When you’re in your 30s, there should be something more on your mind or attention than video games.“
It was surmised among both the hosts and guest that playing video games with your kids is a bit different, but over 30, video games shouldn’t be a concern. For any gamer, this sort of opinion seems outlandish, but if you watch the video and see where the host reading the question bursts out in laughter before she can even finish it, you might just wonder what world these people are living in.
After all, with the enormous success of Facebook, millions upon millions of people are gaming, and according to a recent Entertainment Software Association report, the average gamer age is 37. And among all gamers, an impressive 42% are women.
If Mr. Deutsch thinks it’s ridiculous for someone over 30 to be a gamer, I’d like to know exactly what it is that he thinks is kosher. It’s highly likely that if the question involved movies instead of games, the answers would have been completely different. And how exactly do movies and games differ? They’re both content sources; one just happens to be interactive.
In other news, NBC’s Today show still exists.
