When will some developers learn? Yet again, a much-hyped and technically detailed PC game has hit the market that defaults to a framerate of 30 FPS. I’m not sure about you, but I don’t appreciate a forced “cinematic feel”. There is an upside, though; unlike Ubisoft, which hard-caps the framerate to 60 FPS in its titles, Rocksteady at least allows the cap to be removed in its entirety.
If you own the game and are miffed at the weak framerate, you’ll need to exit the game and edit a simple text file to get around it. You’ll first need to head to the install folder of the game, which will look like this:
<Install Folder>\Batman Arkham Knight\BmGame\Config\BmSystemSettings.ini
Once that file is open in Notepad, or some other editor, you’ll want to look for the line “Max_FPS” and raise the value from 30 to some other desired value, or 9999 if you want to effectively remove it entirely. Once that change has been saved and the game is loaded back up, it should take effect.
What’s most maddening about the low default framerate is that Arkham Knight is a game NVIDIA’s been promoting, as it packs in a number of its technologies, like PhysX Turbulence, Destruction, and Clothing. A default 30 FPS for a game this graphically detailed is like buying a Ferrari but being stuck to a parking lot. At least there’s the option to remove the cap entirely – a path I wish Ubisoft would take.
