Bethesda has just released its first gameplay trailer for the upcoming Quake Champions, and wow, does it look amazing. As one YouTube commenter put it, it’s best to look at this one with cautious optimism, because we all know how these things can go. But still, based on what’s seen here, this could be exactly the kind of Quake game that all serious Quake fans have been waiting for.
For those who can’t watch the video, or want a low-resolution wallpaper, here are some screenshots:
What makes Quake Champions special is that it’s not trying to be anything special at all. It’s simply trying to be like the old Quake titles, delivering creative and eye-catching levels and super-fast gameplay that will get your heart racing. This is fast-paced FPS action at its finest – or so it appears in the video.
Because of its seriously fast-paced action, Quake Champions will not be coming out for the consoles, and id Software has been clear about that from the start. In fact, the developers have even said that they’d love to target greater than 60 FPS, because as with all Quake games, this one should feel as fluid as possible.
This is an incredible time to be an arena-style FPS fan, as a new Unreal Tournament is in active development as well (and can be played right now). Quake Champions‘ release date is still tentative, but it is expected that a beta will become available next year.
