Well, this news is a little bit upsetting. The folks at [H]ard|OCP have obtained a press release from BFG Tech that states its going to be ceasing production of its graphics cards… but, will still continue to deliver and develop both its power supplies, gaming desktops and notebooks.
As the company has become very well-known for its excellent customer service, it’s no surprise that it will continue to fulfill all of its GPU warranties. It also has a full supply of replacement graphics cards in reserve just in case, so if you own a BFG model, you don’t have to worry about dealing with complicated customer service in things should go that route.
Interestingly, I first heard a rumor about BFG Tech making this move earlier this year, but I had figured since nothing happened since then, the company may have decided to hold off the change for as long as possible. In reading comments from [H]ard|OCP’s forums, some even speculate that Fermi was the final nail in the coffin, and that BFG Tech had figured it was no longer worth putting so much effort into graphics cards.
The other more logical reason might be the fact that the graphic card market today is simply littered with numerous brands, so competition is tight. I even know that certain companies (which I won’t mention) have consistently lost money on their graphics card line-ups for years, but in the long run, the added exposure is what’s important. These are of course huge companies I’m talking about, so with today’s competition, it’s almost no surprise to see a smaller player shift its focus elsewhere.
BFG Tech’s press release also states that it will be focusing on new products for the future, which should prove interesting. The company is keeping quiet as to what it will be focusing on, so we might as well let the speculation begin! Actually, given that some companies come out of left field with new products, that might be a little foolish to do (Arctic Cooling with earbuds, OCZ with the Nerual Impulse Actuator, et cetera).
“After eight years of providing innovative, high-quality graphics cards to the market, we regret to say that this category is no longer profitable for us, although we will continue to evaluate it going forward”, said John Slevin, chairman of BFG Technologies. “We will continue to provide our award-winning power supplies and gaming systems, and are working on a few new products as well. I’d like to stress that we will continue to provide RMA support for our current graphics card warranty holders, as well as for all of our other products such as power supplies, PCs and notebooks.”
