It’s that time of year again, Black Friday hits and sales go through the roof. If you are on the lookout for some new hardware for your PC, we’re trawling the Internet to find some of the best deals we can. Rebates may crop up in places, so we’ve included non-rebate items if you don’t want to deal with the hassle.
First up we have some CPU listings for system upgrades. Broadwell never really made much of an impacts, so most CPUs will still be Haswell based. However, if you are looking for something more up to date, look at the new-build CPUs, as Skylake is slowly rolling out.
CPU Upgrades
If you have an old Pentium G3258, modern games are likely to push it beyond its limit. More and more games are not only using more advanced instructions, but also more cores; as such, the venerable Pentium is not something we can easily recommend any more. For the budget minded, an i3-based CPU is probably the way to go moving forward, especially with a more advanced GPU.
For a good all-rounder though, the i5-4690K will provide you with the extra cores, as well as some extra room for overclocking. Take things further, and the 4790K will keep you chugging along happy, at least for the next 3-5 years.
CPU New Builds
With the launch of Skylake, we see a real replacement to Haswell, but with it, a new socket too. These CPUs are really meant for new builds that use the new LGA1151 socket. No mainstream K-series CPUs just yet, but with lower power and a good deal of architectural improvements of Broadwell, these CPUs are going to be around for a while.
GPUs
The hot topic of the day, scrounging for the best GPU you can get before the day’s out. We’ve included a list of cards we’ve found so far, with and without rebates. They are currently listed in order of preference and price, so think of your budget and see what you can get. More will be added as the day progresses.
- ZOTAC GeForce GTX 750Ti 2GB – $95
- EVGA GeForce GTX 950 2GB – $130
- ASUS STRIX Radeon R7 370 2GB – $130 -$20 rebate
- ASUS STRIX Radeon R9 380 2GB $170 -$30 rebate
- XFX Radeon R9 380 2GB – $180
- ZOTAC GeForce GTX 960 2GB – $170
- MSI GeForce GTX 960 2GB – $180 -$30 rebate
- ASUS STRIX GeForce GTX 970 4GB – $300 -$20 rebate
The GTX 750 Ti is still a decent card, even with the release of the GTX 950. If your budget can stretch to the 950, then go for it, as this will let you play most older games and MMOs at 1080p without issue. For something a little more serious, the R9 380 will likely be the best high-end mainstream card, as it beats the GTX 960 on a number of benchmarks.
For the best all-around card going at the moment, it’s hard to beat the GTX 970, especially when it can be had for $280 after rebate.
