Over the weekend, BMW released a trailer that highlights some of the features that’s coming to its new 7 series, and while a peek at the finished car is creatively avoided, what’s talked about is enough to get people excited.
The new 7 series is going to be the most technological one yet, but that shouldn’t strike anyone as a surprise. However, some of what’s coming could. The first feature talked about is remote control parking, which allows you to park the vehicle in your garage or drive it out without being inside it. This kind of feature would be useful if you were getting ready and by the time you head out the front door, the car is sitting there waiting.
That feature along with others is controlled by a brand-new key that BMW simply calls “display key”; it acts as both a remote control and LCD control screen.
When inside the car, you’ll be able to use gestures to control the interface in the dashboard, and for even more enhanced functionality, you can also touch the screen. An example shown involves a GPS, which you can touch to zoom in and out with. Further, an “all-new level” of voice command is promised.
Inspired by its own i series of electric vehicles, BMW has infused the new 7 series with enough carbon fiber to warrant some new branding: Carbon Core. Use of carbon fiber isn’t just for bling bling, and in fact, it seems likely that very little will actually be seen on the surface; instead, it’s laced through the structure of the vehicle, reducing weight, and increasing rigidity. Thanks to this, BMW says that the new 7 series “doesn’t feel like a big car”.
The trailer teases that the wait for the new 7 series is “almost over”, but it seems clear that the company isn’t quite finished telling us about all that’s in store. We’re promised that another update is en route, so now it’s just a matter of waiting for that to come out. Perhaps some other autonomous driving feature is in store?
