For a number of reasons, Apple’s latest Mac Pro is a neat machine. It might look like a trash can, but the fact that it can pack as much power as it does into its small frame is, without question, mind-blowing. Still, as far as “true” workstations go, the Mac Pro might not be up to the task that some need it to be. After all, who ever said that workstations should be as small as possible? They’re workstations!
Nonetheless, the simplicity of the Mac Pro didn’t escape the folks over at BOXX, who’ve been well-known for building some of the biggest, most powerful workstations out there. And so a video was created, poking fun at the cute little Mac Pro:
Well – it’s more than just “poking fun”, because a lot of good points are raised, but none of them should have escaped anyone at this point. For those in the market for a PC workstation, Mac Pro’s lack of an NVIDIA GPU option might hurt, as well as the inability to implement 10Gbps Ethernet (though a solution through Thunderbolt -could- be possible), and then we have the total lack of expanability with hard drives, GPUs, CPUs, and so forth.
On a special page, BOXX highlights the differences between the Mac Pro and what it can pull off, but I do admit that I wish it would have compared a similarly-priced BOXX with a Mac Pro, to show the real differences. But if the goal here was mainly pointing out the Mac Pro’s lack of expandability, I’d say the company’s been successful.
