“We can picture the scene. As the Pariah release date looms ever closer, an emergency meeting is held. “We need more time,†states one developer. “Time is money,†retorts the Suit, “and everything we have left is for the marketing campaign.†“But there’s still so much left to do,†the worried developer replies. “Save it for the sequel,†sneers the Suit, before adjusting his tie and calmly departing, briefcase in hand.
It’s right about then that we imagine the Grolsch guy making an appearance. “Schtop,†he exclaims, impeding the Suit’s progress, “This video game is not ready yet.†And indeed it isn’t, so we can only imagine he was busy that day. Just think: a potentially great video game ruined by Dutch beer. Damn the Netherlands!
Putting our overactive imaginations aside for the moment, Pariah is a pretty conventional console shooter, which is another way of saying it’s a lot like Halo. We can assure you that this isn’t just a lazy comparison. It’s a checkpoint FPS that features a mixture of indoor and outdoor locations, has some semi-futuristic weapons, a distinctly low-gravity feel to the jumping and a smattering of technical vehicles. There’s a story told through rendered cut-scenes about a virus and an alien threat, and a split-screen co-op mode and online play are also present.”
They only gave the game a 69%. I personally played the demo recently, and I defintely can’t say I was that impressed either. Check out the full review here.
