Today, if someone tells you that they play Grand Theft Auto V or Minecraft, it’s no big deal – both games are seriously popular, after all. But what would you think if someone told you that they played Chip’s Challenge? If you didn’t grow up during the Windows 3.x era, you might think they’re just pulling a random name out of their hat.
But, believe it or not, Chip’s Challenge was incredibly popular back when it was released in 1989 for the Atari Lynx, and 1991 for Windows, via the Best of Microsoft Entertainment Pack (SkiFree and JezzBall were also featured here).
Chip’s Challenge (2015 Release)
I don’t think my family played the game until years after its initial release, but I still have fond memories of it. While I wasn’t that great at the game myself, I remember my mother clearing its 150 or so levels and being in awe of it – the game wasn’t exactly easy in its later levels.
Well, anyone who has fond memories like I do will no doubt by intrigued by the fact that the classic is being re-released next month on Steam. But, it gets even better. Back in the day, the game’s creator, Chuck Sommerville, failed to bring Chip’s Challenge 2 to market due to the fact that the trademark had been sold. Well, that has been worked around to finally see the game released – so finally, 20 some odd years later, you will be able to play the true Chip’s Challenge sequel.
Chip’s Challenge (Original Release)
Both Chip’s Challenge 1 and 2 are set to release on May 28, with the original costing $1.99, and the sequel, $4.99. A DLC level editor will also be made available for the second game, costing $2.99. Once the games become purchasable on Steam, all three will be available together for $4.99 for a limited time.
