Are mechanical keyboards with CHERRY MX Red switches still too slow for your twitch reflex actions? Corsair will soon be rolling out a new branch of some of its iconic peripherals in the new RAPIDFIRE range. The three keyboards, the K70, K70 RGB, and K65 RGB, will soon start to get a new switch type, the MX Speed.
The CHERRY MX Speed switch is a tuned red with a much shorter actuation point, just 1.2mm. These switches will be extremely sensitive, and it might not be too much of a stretch that you could get them to trigger just by blowing on them. Corsair states in the press release that this 1.2mm is 40% ‘faster’ than the standard red switches, which have 2mm actuation points, while still keeping the same 45g activation force.
The keyboards will keep much of the same features as before, such as the aluminum construction, floating keys, and that extremely handy volume scroller and media keys. The RGB version of the K70 will be getting a slight upgrade to the LEDs used on the backlight, with greater customization in the colors and patterns available.
The standard K70 will have the same new backlight patterns, but just in a shade of red. The K65 RGB will feature the same LED customization and new MX Speed switches, just in a TKL frame (Ten-Key-Less), i.e. it’s missing the numpad.
This isn’t the first interesting innovation from Corsair either, as it introduced us to the exclusive MX Silent switches (reds that are very quiet), which we recently reviewed on the Strafe RGB. Corsair also worked with CHERRY to develop a standardized format for the RGB ranges of switches. Corsair certainly takes its keyboards seriously, and for that we are grateful. Stay tuned for our thoughts on the new RAPIDFIRE range as we get them in to review.
You can pick up the new MX Speed range of keyboards direct from Corsair. The top-end K70 RGB RAPIDFIRE will set you back $170, the TKL K65 RGB RAPIDFIRE will be $150, and the non-RGB K70 RAPIDFIRE will set you back $130. Be sure to check out Amazon too, as the price might fluctuate a bit there.
