Need a NAS with a little more oomph? Is money of little concern? If so, Thecus’ just-announced N16000 might be worth a perusal, as it aims to be the ultimate in centralized storage with the ability to support up to 48TB worth of storage! As the name suggests, that can be done with 16 hard drives, 3TB a piece. And because the N16000 supports SATA 3.0, fast transfer speeds are a given.
You can guess I’m sure that this isn’t a typical NAS box, and it isn’t. Under its rackmount hood, it packs in 8GB of RAM, supports SATA 3.0 and SAS, offers three LAN ports (10/100/1000 BASE-TX), six USB 2.0 ports, 2 USB 3.0 ports, 2 eSATA connectors in the back, and easy upgradeability to 10Gb networking, or even faster thanks to the freely available PCI Express slots.
Oh, did I mention this NAS packs in an Intel Xeon X3480 quad-core processor? That’s right, this is not a usual NAS box, as it aims to offer incredible storage ability along with incredible speed, and it’s not for the feint of heart. People who splurge on this sucker will be in serious need of a reliable data solution, and thanks to its ability to upgrade certain components, it should last for quite a while. Of course, the hardware bundled in this thing as is, is hardly a detriment.
Cost? Oh, a cool $6,000. That’s sans hard drives, so tack on the cost for those, and this is one hearty investment. And while I don’t remotely need 48TB of storage, I still can’t help but drool all over the thought of owning one of these. It’s a beast!
The N16000 sticks with Thecus’s proud tradition of industry leading performance set by products such as the N4200 and the N7700PRO.
