Poor Crytek. I forget where it was, but I read an interview with Crytek’s Cevat Yerli a couple of years ago where he stated that the “next Crysis” wouldn’t be PC-exclusive like Crysis and Crysis Warhead were. Why? Piracy, and nothing but. Games are so easy to pirate on the PC, and with a game as mega-popular as Crysis, there’s little doubt that Crytek was a victim to piracy in a huge way. Thus, Crysis 2 would also become available on consoles.
Well, things are kicking off to no better a start with Crysis 2, as both EA and Crytek have confirmed that a developer build of the game has been leaked, nearly a month-and-a-half in advance. Apparently, the leak is riddled with bugs and crashes often, not to mention also features many unfinished textures and placeholders, but for all intents and purposes, the entire single player campaign is present, along with the multi-player counterpart.
EA and Crytek are no doubt perturbed at the leak, and stress to their fans that, “We encourage fans to support the game and the development team by waiting and purchasing the final, polished game on March 22.” We’d have to agree. A company like Crytek that pushes innovation on the PC deserves our support, especially when PC gaming has turned into a console port paradise. I can’t wait to get the game and (probably) begin benchmarking with it!
I have no words. Actually, I have some words- according to a thread of the Facepunch forums (which may or may not be deleted any second depending how the Facepunch server holds up), a developer build of Crysis 2 containing the full game, multiplayer and the master key for the online authentication has been leaked, and is currently freely available from all sorts of astonishingly illegal websites.
