I think there would be few people who would disagree that advanced physics can really add to the enjoyment of a game, but up to this point, there have been few titles on the market that have pushed the boundaries and really have shown us what robust physics really look like. We have games that utilize PhysX, sure, but even there, it all seems to be a work-in-progress.
Late last week, I stumbled on a YouTube video by the user Xigmatek (not to be confused with the cooling company), and in it, numerous examples of the “Xtreme Particle Chaos Physics Mod” is shown off. At first, I didn’t expect too much, but I quickly realized that the work done here is simply amazing, and in some cases, jaw-dropping (no joke – there was one part where I literally did a total :-O).
The mod is, not surprisingly, completely free of charge, and believe it or not, it rolls in at just over 1MB. The reason for this is that Xigmatek hasn’t added textures or code to the game, but has rather spent hundreds of hours editing the game’s files that control each physics effect. So after applying the patch, it looks like it can be easily removed, simply by replacing your ‘System.cfg’ file under the Crysis Warhead directory.
You can see a higher-res version of the video here and can download the mod here. I recommend checking out Xigmatek’s profile from time to time if you want an updated version, though, as he seems to keep the updates flowing. I plan to give this a good test soon… looks like far too much fun.
