It seems that id’s RAGE couldn’t have been more aptly named, as for PC gamers, it’s been an emotion felt as getting the game to just look good and run well has been tough. Unfortunately, the game is very un-id Software like in that it clearly wasn’t developed for PC gamers. The issues gamers are experiencing are many, but one of the most prevalent has to do with weak texture detail.
I spent some time looking through the official Steam forums for the game yesterday, and it seems that issues with low-resolution textures are wide-spread. But, NVIDIA has just posted a guide for both GeForce and Radeon users that aims to fix that issue for the most part. The process in effect just increases the texture resolution from 4K to 8K.
The reason a lot of gamers are not seeing the best textures possible is that the game employs a ridiculous “auto-detect” algorithm that applies settings it believes you’ll be able to run. This is, quite simply, stupid. PC gamers are more than capable to choose their own settings, and in the event they’re not, nothing’s wrong with choosing between Low, Medium and High.
Moving from the game’s auto mode to force 8K textures reveals an incredible change in the clarity of the scene. All textures look better, as do the shadows. The problem – you must edit various configuration files to get this done. We can hope that id Software will release a patch at some point that will allow easier configuration changes. No gamer should have to go to such levels to enjoy a game they just paid $60 for.
For those experiencing other issues, Bethesda has posted a FAQ at its site here.
