Deus Ex: Mankind Divided Gets Hit With New DirectX 12 Patch To Add mGPU Support

About two months ago, Square Enix’s Deus Ex: Mankind Divided was treated to a long-awaited DirectX 12 patch. Unfortunately, that patch introduced almost nothing new outside of the basic fact that the game would now support the DX12 API. Well, the game has been treated to another patch today, which is much more substantial: it introduces support for multi-GPU.
Multi-GPU in DirectX 12 allows two graphics cards to work together to improve performance, without the need of proprietary technologies like CrossFire or SLI. That means that with mGPU, no bridge is required to physical attach two graphics cards together, something that could make mGPU better than those other solutions.
So what can you expect? AMD claims that performance boosts of 100% should be possible, which does in fact equate to a doubling of average framerates (examples of that are given). Based on PC Perspective‘s initial testing, though, we’re not sure if that’s going to be typical. It found that adding a second Radeon RX 480 improved the average framerate by 59% – still a healthy gain, but quite a bit off of 100%.
On the NVIDIA side, PC Per found that mGPU support made no difference whatsoever. Literally none: both with single and dual GPU, the configurations hit the same 58.1 FPS average. Something tells us that this will be fixed in the near-future, since mGPU has been something NVIDIA has seemed anxious about supporting (I’m not sure off-hand if the company’s cards support mGPU in other titles).
In an email sent to us this morning, AMD notes that this new DirectX 12 patch includes support for its asynchronous compute engines found in its GCN architecture, as well as support for frame pacing, ensuring that gameplay looks as smooth as it possibly can.
If you want to take advantage of the new patch, all you have to do is update the game and make sure you enable the API in the settings pop-up.
