In the summer of 2000, Ion Storm released what became an instant cult classic and its most successful title during its tenure, Deus Ex. On the surface, the game looked like the usual futuristic action game, but for fans, there’s a lot more to it than that. At its heart, it’s an RPG in the truest sense of the word, allowing the player the opportunity to build their character to their liking, which made sure that no two playthroughs were exactly alike.
The game featured a detailed cyberpunk-themed world set in 2052, solid voice acting, great music, lots of puzzles, an immersive story and a convincing eleven year wait for a proper follow-up. Oh wait a minute, that last one isn’t such a notable feature, is it?
That was a horrible attempt at a joke, but it’s true. While Deus Ex has had one sequel, it wasn’t well-received, making the latest iteration, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, one that fans will admit to having waited more than ten years for. Is this going to be GOTY material? So far, it sure seems to be on the right track.
Possibly the best part of the game is that it acts as a prequel to the original, which should do well to fill fans in on some of the roots that led to the deep story previously learned. The player will take control of Adam Jensen this time around, and throughout the game, events will lead to the creation of the UNATCO anti-terrorist organization.
So far, the game has been receiving some great response, with Ars Technica applauding Eidos Montreal for focusing more on the PC version than any other – a true rarity in today’s gaming landscape. Editor Ben Kuchera starts off his review with a clear statement, “All the effort paid off. Not only is the game an amazing return to form for Deus Ex but the PC version does nearly everything right.“
At Gamerankings, the game has received an aggregated score of 88.62% across eight reviews, which RPG-wise matches (even surpasses a little) the success of The Witcher 2, which to this date has evened out at 87.87%.
Need more convincing that this game is going to be epic? Well, a bunch of us on the Techgage staff are queued up and ready to play through, so we’ll be relaying our thoughts on it as time goes on (perhaps even talking a bit about it on the forums). Are any of you guys going to pick it up right away? Wait for a sale? Have no interest? Inquiring minds want to know!
