In the world of digital game sales, Valve’s Steam platform is undeniably the current champion, and for most people I know, it’s the first choice for their purchases. But, there exist other services that have been around almost just as long – Direct2Drive being one of them. No doubt feeling the heat of current Steam sales, the service is offering gamers a couple of tempting options.
As the title here suggests, one on five purchases will be instantly refunded, regardless of cost. You could purchase one game for $25 and get it for free, or purchase 100 games for $2,500 and again get it for free. It’s a total gamble, but it might be a tempting one for gamers who have been contemplating getting their upcoming purchases off of Steam.
There seem to be a couple of caveats for D2D here, so I’m not sure what kind of protections the peeps there have in place. It wouldn’t be too hard for someone to sign up with multiple accounts and purchase the same order five times over in order to get one for free (yes I’m aware of the rules of randomization), then canceling or halting payment for the others. It’d be a hassle, but I’ve seen people work harder for less, so this wouldn’t be a surprise.
For those more ethical gamers out there, the 20% chance can be tempting, but is it tempting enough to go for rather than the real sales being offered at Steam? It’s a tough one! In addition to this game of roulette, Direct2Drive is also offering gamers a chance at a $50 credit by tweeting “#D2DGivesBack” without quotes to their Twitter. Simple, but possibly rewarding!
Gamers, thanks for an awesome year! As a thank you to our entire community, we’re celebrating the final weeks of 2010 by giving you FREE games!
