When Techgage launched in early 2005, the hottest and most demanding PC game at the time was DOOM 3, which had just come out six or so months earlier. I still vividly remember just how gorgeous the game was at the time, and being in awe at the fact that a 512MB graphics card was recommended for Ultra detail.
It’s almost hard to believe that was ten years ago, especially when you realize that it’s taken all of those years for the next official iteration in the series to be announced. Bethesda took care of that at E3, with a game simply called “DOOM“. Numbered iterations might not be as cool as they used to be.
Here’s what Bethesda has to say: “Developed by id software, the studio that pioneered the first-person shooter genre and created multiplayer Deathmatch, DOOM returns as a brutally fun and challenging modern-day shooter experience. Relentless demons, impossibly destructive guns, and fast, fluid movement provide the foundation for intense, first-person combat – whether you’re obliterating demon hordes through the depths of Hell in the single-player campaign, or competing against your friends in numerous multiplayer modes. Expand your gameplay experience using DOOM SnapMap game editor to easily create, play, and share your content with the world.”
I admit I didn’t think I’d care much about another DOOM game, but after watching the trailer and perusing the screenshots, I’m starting to come around. After poring over them yourself, what do you think? Could this become the next truly epic DOOM game?
