Despite the rather enormous hype hovering around Apple’s iPhone 4G, a common complaint over the past couple of months has been the company’s renewed interest in dismissing Adobe’s Flash as being a worthwhile technology. Some people, including me, have simply written off Apple products for the time-being, because as far as I’m concerned, no company should decide for us whether we want a technology or not, especially when it’s one that pretty much dominates the Internet.
But for those who still can’t escape the glorious lustre that is the iPhone (and I admit, it’s a sweet device, issues like these aside), hope just might be on the way to help you have the best of both worlds. The same guys who brought us the Sprint jailbreak have been working on delivering Flash on the iPhone, but it’s not quite clear how it’s going to be done.
So far, there is one video online that shows the technology in action, but as the host of the video doesn’t click on an Internet browser on the device, but rather an application, it’s hard to tell what the end solution will be. Other current solutions online involve taking a Flash .swf file, then converting it into an HTML5 readable format, which for the most part seems to be the easiest solution.
For services like YouTube and others that aim to support HTML5 to its fullest extent, this kind of converter won’t be needed, but for sites that don’t have an option, a solution like this would be useful. I am not sure if they exist now, but I foresee many Web services that are built around converting Flash into HTML5, and as far as I’m concerned, that’s a good thing. Flash isn’t perfect, but it’s too prevalent to ignore, at least right now.
Sure it looks horrible and the video is awful, but believe us when we tell you that the same guys who created the Spirit jailbreak have ported Flash to the iPhone. The video, apparently taken through the pinhole camera truck the Bloodhound Gang built back in the 1980s to see where they were being taken after a kidnapping, shows a Strongbad clip.
