For some, overclocking is more than just fun… it’s an art. And to excel at this art, unconventional tricks must be used in order to obtain the best benchmarking scores possible and leave the competition in the dust. One such trick is to adjust GPU clocks on-the-fly, depending on the particular test being run. But for benchmarks like 3DMark, which don’t allow peripheral usage while its running, the ability to do that is limited.
This is where remote overclocking comes in. ASUS spearheaded this technology with ROG Connect, but for users of non-ASUS products, the luxury of remote overclocking has never been readily available. EVGA helps remedy this with its new Precision X app for Android (sorry iPhone users, it’s not clear if a version is en route for you).
To take advantage of Precision X, a Bluetooth-capable PC is required. This is a little unfortunate, as many motherboards don’t ship with Bluetooth built-in. It’d be great if the program could act as a server in the future, allowing you to connect through the network via WiFi.
Nonetheless, Precision X offers similar options as the desktop version, and nothing appears to be held back. If you enter new settings on your phone and apply them, they will take affect on the PC immediately. This is useful in the event that a certain overclock isn’t stable during a specific test in a suite, but is stable in all the others. Of course, if you simply find overclocking more convenient through your phone (for any particular reason), this looks to be a great option.
