G.SKILL’s portfolio is so chock-full with high-speed memory, it’s really hard to keep track of it all. Without fail, the company continues to shoot us press releases announcing even faster speeds, and often, the touting of new world records. Today’s release, though, isn’t exactly typical. It’s not of full-sized DDR4 that we’ve wrote about before, but instead SO-DIMM modules. Small package, but big bragging-right.
With its latest kit, G.SKILL is giving consumers 32GB (8GB modules) at DDR4-3800 speeds, which is downright impressive given their smaller frame, and the fact that they’re designed for ITX motherboards. While these same SO-DIMMs would probably work in a compatible notebook, chances are extremely unlikely that you’ll be able to utilize these top-end speeds (few notebooks even give that level of hands-on customization).
Interestingly, despite their small size and big frequencies, these sticks are spec’d with timings of 18-18-18, which is actually better than the fastest 3800MHz kit I could find on Amazon (Corsair Vengeance @ CL19).
To validate this kit, G.SKILL loaded up an ASRock X299E-ITX/ac motherboard with the four sticks, coupled with Intel’s 10-core Core i9-7900X:
One thing that’s left uncertain about this kit is its cost, and that’s no surprise given the lack of competition, and also the fact that it’s not expected to hit etail until December. If you want one, you’ll be waiting a bit, unfortunately. Still, that doesn’t diminish what’s otherwise a very cool launch.
