Let’s be honest about something: keyboards are a dime a dozen. Mechanical keyboards are a dime a dozen. LED mechanical keyboards are a dime a dozen!! Given this, it’s really becoming hard to get excited about a new keyboard release whenever one hits our inbox, but where G.SKILL’s new planks are concerned, I’m glad I decided to peer inside, because both upcoming offerings are quite sharp.
Those are the RIPJAWS KM570 MX and KM770 RGB. As their names suggest, one is higher-end than the other, but both are well worth a look.
The KM570 will sport just a single color – red – and focuses on ease-of-use and high performance without the need of software. Both the LED customization and macro configuration can be controlled on the keyboard itself, removing one piece of pesky software from having to be installed.
While the KM570 might just have a single color, it offers 7 different modes and brightness levels so that you can customize it to your liking. This standard design keyboard doesn’t include dedicated media keys, but a number of keys surrounding the plank include those features, which can be triggered with the Fn key on the right side of the spacebar.
Overall, the KM570 is a very clean-looking mech – even professional, LEDs be damned.
The KM770 RGB is a higher-end model that, as the name suggests, sports multi-color LEDs. This is actually a “streamlined” version of the company’s KM780 RGB, and retains its most important features, including the brushed aluminum construction, a mouse cable holder, and huge variety of RGB effects.
The name might make it sound like the KM770 is lower-end than the KM780, but I’m not so sure that’s the case. G.SKILL says that the KM770, in comparison to the KM780, can produce more vibrant colors, and like the KM570, adds the ability to create macros right on the keyboard itself.
If you’re a KM780 owner who’s now a bit miffed that the KM770 has more “vibrant” color, it might appease you to know that G.SKILL will soon be issuing a firmware update that will offer the same brightness to your board’s top row of keys. That’s awfully specific, but it’s at least something.
G.SKILL anticipates that both of these new planks will become available in Q3. Pricing is currently TBD.
