Gigabyte Launches “OC Guru Is YOU!” Competition

Feel like getting your OC on, but don’t have a good reason to? Well, our friends at Gigabyte are giving you that reason, in the form of the “OC Guru Is YOU!” overclocking competition. All you need is a sweet graphics card overclock and achieve the best overall score with 3DMark Vantage, and $1,500 will be yours. Or, hit the best GPU score and win a brand-new Radeon HD 5870 Super Overclock.

Gigabyte is holding this contest to celebrate the announcement of its Super Overclock series of graphics cards, although that happened last fall. The company is proud of the series thanks in part to the high quality it demands. As mentioned throughout our articles before, Gigabyte implements what’s called a “GPU Gauntlet” with its Super Overclock cards, which assure that only the best product makes it into your hands.

The company isn’t holding this contest on its own, though, but rather has enlisted the help of a service that its supported for quite some time, HWBOT. Unfortunately, like many overclocking contests, this one favors those who already have high-end hardware, because someone with mainstream parts isn’t going to have a chance.

The company has separated the $1,500 prize though to award that person with the highest Vantage overall score, so it looks like your best chance is to use (ironically) an NVIDIA card with PhysX turned on, and then really overclock your CPU. I yearn for the day when an OC’ing contest will enable anyone with OC’ing skills to win.
