It’s taken a while to reach this point, but we’re finally here: Oculus’ Rift has been released. If you were one of the first to preorder the device, you’ll likewise be one of the first to receive it (and chances are you’d be well-aware of when it’s going to land). If you missed the boat, or want to place an order right now, you’ll be in for a bit of a wait, as due to the backlog, the next units won’t ship until July. Ouch.
If you own a Rift, or will be receiving one soon, you’ll want to take note of brand-new drivers AMD and NVIDIA both released today. On the AMD side, it’s the Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.3.2 you’ll want to snag, while for NVIDIA, it’s GeForce 364.72. As of the time of writing, the driver doesn’t appear to be live on AMD’s site, but it should become available soon. NVIDIA’s driver can be snagged right here.
AMD’s 16.3.2 driver is a bit of an interesting specimen, as it doesn’t just add support for Oculus Rift SDK 1.3, but also the upcoming Radeon Pro Duo graphics card, which we wrote about a couple of weeks ago. AMD hasn’t announced a launch date for the Pro Duo, but given this driver supports it, its launch can’t be that far off.
NVIDIA’s 364.72 is optimized for both the Rift and Vive, and brings with it a number of profile updates, with affected games including Dark Souls III, Paragon, Killer Instinct, and Quantum Break. There’s also another little treat: VR has been absorbed into GeForce Experience, so if you want to take the hassle out of configuring a VR game for your particular configuration, GFE can help.
With the Rift having launched (at least in a limited capacity), the wait now begins for HTC’s Vive, which is set to begin shipping on April 5.
Update: AMD’s 16.3.2 driver is now available.
