The title of this post targets RGB, but to be fair, cost could also be a major factor here. Nonetheless, one of the latest releases from GIGABYTE’s Aorus brand baffles me a bit. At first, I was excited to see the company enter the DRAM market, but after seeing what’s on offer, I feel like this is a kit that should have been released after the company was already established in this market.
The Aorus RGB memory is a 2x8GB kit spec’d at DDR3-3200 speeds, with 16-18-18 timings. This makes it a moderate kit; neither the timings (for the clock) or the overall speed is even close to record-breaking, but again, this must come down to cost.
If you’re building a rig that’s destined to have a lot of RGB, it’s probably annoying to only use two sticks of memory – because let’s face it, four sticks looks better. Still, would you go as far to install non-working DIMMs at a lower cost to make up the difference? Aorus hopes so, and personally, I’m beyond interested in seeing the kind of demand there is out there for this kind of thing.
As you probably expect, these dummy modules are identical to the real thing; they simply don’t have memory chips on them. What they do have is full-fledged RGB capabilities, so overall, these dummy sticks won’t detract from anything, except your overall memory capacity. This is a patent-pending design, so we hope the RGB masters, Corsair, weren’t planning on a similar product.
This kit of memory and non-memory will become available at the end of this month for $229 USD. Based on current pricing I’m seeing, that’s very reasonable, so it’s not as though Aorus is charging you anything notable for the extra dummy sticks, and for that, it’s to be commended. Even if I don’t personally “get it”.
Fortunately, these sticks use Samsung B-die chips, so if you’re an overclocker, you’ll likely be able to push them higher than the DDR4-3200 clock, and likely also whittle the timings down a little bit, if you want to increase the voltage.
What do you guys think of this kit? Would you buy it, or just put up with half of your DIMM slots empty?
