How much time would you say you spend online each day… or month? Think about it for a minute and the result might scare you. Of all that time spent online, how exactly are you spending it? Financial information site VisualEconomics has put together a poster with the help of Pew and Nielsen reports to help gain a better understanding of the averages, and as expected, we spend a lot of time online.
According to these reports, the average time a user spends online is 60 hours per month, which equates to an entire month of the year. It’s important to note that this is the average and includes those who barely use the Internet at all and those who use it virtually non-stop. It’s not the best measure for things, but it should even itself out in the end.
Of all these hours spent online, 22% is spent on social networking, while 42% is spent viewing content, which could include images, video, and likely also in-browser games. The other 36% belongs to the more mundane things of the Web such as e-mail, search, commerce and visiting Techgage. Alright, I might have tossed that last one in there.
The “Most Popular Brands” reveals some interesting results, and also some not-so-interesting results. Google is not surprisingly on top of the pile, but Bing isn’t all too far behind. Facebook, Yahoo!, Microsoft and YouTube almost share the same share of user percentages, at around 45%, with Wikipedia, AOL, eBay and Apple falling down to around the 25% mark.
There are more statistics worth checking out as well, but I won’t spoil them. Those include social networking usage on a country-to-country basis and also a more refined look at daily activities.
