We’re not sure how it happened, but somehow, the fact that HyperX would be releasing its first-ever gaming keyboard flew right under our radar. But, while on one hand, it would have been nice to anticipate its launch, on the other, we’re able to learn about it at the exact same time that the plank hits the market. Yup – you can buy one of these today; you just need to hit up Amazon or Newegg.
So, what does your $100 $99.99 get you? HyperX, and its parent Kingston, have never been known to want to simply release a “me-too” product. If it can’t somehow best another product on features, the company’s goal has always been to simply make it better than the other options out there. But, considering the fact that other vendors have been releasing mechanical keyboards for years (especially Corsair and Cooler Master), Kingston is about to step into a field of giants as a little squirt. Fortunately, its keyboard sports a solid steel frame (hence “ALLOY”), which could help it double as an effective weapon.
The ALLOY FPS has a seriously simple design, with all unneeded chassis trimmed off. This is the keyboard version of a bezelless display. The keys are raised off of the chassis, similar to what we’ve seen from Corsair many times over, which means cleaning out your keyboard should be a lot easier than typical designs.
Unlike most keyboards strictly targeted at gamers, the ALLOY FPS doesn’t include the super-smooth linear CHERRY MX Red switches, but rather the bump-enabled and louder CHERRY MX Blue. Both switches are fantastic in their own right, but opting for Blue is an interesting decision on HyperX’s part.
Other key features of the ALLOY FPS include red LED backlighting (with 6 modes), a Game Mode to disable the Windows key, anti-ghosting, full N-key rollover, a USB charging port at the back, a detachable cable, a mesh travel pouch for protection, and extra keycaps for WASD/1234 that are textured for a bit of a different feel.
As mentioned above, the ALLOY FPS is available right now. If needed, you can hit up the official product page right here.
