Lamptron to Release Touchscreen Fan Controller with 30W Per Channel

This past summer, our cooling resident Bill took a look at NZXT’s latest fan controller release, the tabletop Sentry LXE. The massive benefit of this controller wasn’t so much the fact that it was an external unit, but that it had a touchscreen for a more interactive experience. In the end, Bill awarded the Sentry LXE our coveted Editor’s Choice award, and a well-deserved one at that.

If there was just one problem I had with that controller, though, or at least something I would have liked to see upgraded, it would be its top-end support for 10W per channel. While that might suffice for most fans out there, if I were to personally choose fans to equip with any controller, I’d like to go as high as 30W – a fact reinforced to me after this past summer’s grueling heat. Sure, 30W fans are going to be loud, but I’d rather listen to them than have  someone find me melted on the floor next to the benchmarking PC.

To help with this, and to deliver a unique spin on the touchscreen fan controller, Lamptron is soon to release its latest offering, the FCT, or Fan Controller Touch. Like most of the other offerings out there, this one is of a 5.25″ form-factor, meaning that it can be safely installed into a standard ODD drive bay. Aesthetically, the FCT comes in black and silver, and has a milled surface to perfectly complement a chassis such as Corsair’s 800D.

The controller includes a total of six channels and the touchscreen allows you to configure the RPM, voltages, temperature readout and more. And believe it or not… there’s actually a processor in this thing. Lamptron employs an ARM processor and also on-board memory to assure smooth performance, and also the ability to store various profiles. Robust is certainly the word.

If there’s an immediate downside, it’s that the FCT will hit retail at around $70 USD. The company stands by that pricing, though, as it does include a robust processor typically found in mobile phones, a high-quality touchscreen and much beefier specs than most other fan controllers out there. We’re awaiting our sample and will be delivering a review as soon as possible.
