The last time we took a look at Raptr’s “most-played” leaderboards, it was hot and bright outside in eastern Canada, and as I’m craving some summer right about now, let’s indulge in some nostalgia.
Despite the fact that League of Legends ranked first the last time we checked out the leaderboards, I didn’t mention it, because I just thought it was standard fare. Well, at that time, it was only the game’s third month in that spot. Fast-forward to today, and the game has successfully topped the charts ten months in a row, with a current share of about 20%.
According to Raptr, about 4x more people play LoL than Dota 2, but it’s important to note that these rankings are composed of only Raptr users, and because Raptr doesn’t give us actual numbers, it’s impossible to know how LoL here compares to Dota 2 at Steam – which as of the time of writing has peaked at 1.15 million concurrent players today. Another thing to prove that this list is definitely not applicable to PC gaming at large is that Minecraft can now hit 1 million concurrent players, yet it scores a meager 1.69% share on Raptr.
Nonetheless, there are a couple of other interesting trends to take note of. Despite the fact that World of Warcraft saw the release of a new expansion a few months ago, which did boost playtime numbers, the game’s overall percentage dropped about 5% between January and December.
What’s most interesting to me about these leaderboards is that just a couple of games dominate the top, while the rest in the top 20 have a share of 2% or less. Beginning at 14th place, the games begin to dip below 1%.
With a couple of hot titles having just been released, like Evolve and Dying Light, it’ll be interesting to see if either one of them can breach the top 20 next month. They’re up against some serious competition, that’s for sure.
